How to Calculate VAT

Value-Added Tax (VAT) can be confusing, but calculating it is simple once you know the formulas. Whether you need to add tax to a price or strip it out, here is how to do it manually or using our tool.

1. How to Add VAT to a Base Price

If you have a net price (before tax) and need to find the total price including VAT, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Divide your local VAT rate by 100 to turn it into a decimal (e.g. 20% = 0.20).
  • Step 2: Add 1 to that decimal (e.g. 1 + 0.20 = 1.20).
  • Step 3: Multiply your base price by that number.
Total Price = Net Price × (1 + VAT Rate ÷ 100)

Example: If an item costs £100 and VAT is 20%, multiply £100 by 1.20 to get £120.

2. How to Remove VAT from a Total Price

If you have a gross price (the final amount paid) and want to find out how much the item cost before tax, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Divide your local VAT rate by 100 and add 1 (e.g. 20% = 1.20).
  • Step 2: Divide the total price by that number to get the net price.
Net Price = Total Price ÷ (1 + VAT Rate ÷ 100)

Example: If a total bill is £120 and VAT is 20%, divide £120 by 1.20 to see that the base price was £100.

How to Edit a PDF Safely Online

When editing official documents, contracts, or personal forms online, security and data privacy should be your top priority. Here is how to modify your documents safely:

1. Check for a Secure Connection

Before using any online tool, look at your browser’s address bar. Ensure the website URL begins with https:// and shows a lock icon. This means your connection is encrypted so third parties cannot intercept your data.

2. Choose Tools That Don’t Upload Your Files

The safest editors never send your document to a server at all. Our PDF editor processes everything entirely inside your browser — your file is never uploaded, stored, or shared. When you close the tab, nothing remains.

3. Keep Sensitive Information Hidden

If a document contains highly sensitive details (such as full card numbers or passwords), use a whiteout or redact tool to permanently mask that data before saving or sharing the final copy.

4. Download and Finish

Once you have finished adding text, filling out your form, or signing your document, download the completed PDF to your local device. Because nothing is ever uploaded, closing the browser tab is all it takes to clear your file completely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about calculating VAT and editing PDFs.

To add VAT, multiply the net amount by the VAT rate and add it back on — for example, £1,000 at 20% is £1,000 × 0.20 = £200 VAT, giving a gross total of £1,200. To remove VAT from a gross figure, divide by 1 plus the rate (£1,200 ÷ 1.20 = £1,000). Our calculator above does both instantly as you drag the rate slider.
